The coronavirus is currently very present! Every day there are new news on the subject, which often particularly affect travellers. Cruise travellers are stuck on their ships, special checks are carried out at airports and more and more airlines are cancelling their flights to and from China.
Meanwhile, the entire Lufthansa Group, i.e. Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss and more, are suspending their flights to China. Also Italians, British, Finns and many others might have problems to travel to China at the moment, because the big airlines from all over the world have all stopped their flights to the East Asian country.
But what happens if your own flight is cancelled because of the virus? Can you get compensation for this?
Unfortunately, in the case of the coronavirus, injured travellers are not entitled to compensation.
There are official travel warnings for China - the individual countries have agreed to a high to extreme travel risk. This is regarded as an exceptional circumstance and releases the airlines from the obligation to pay compensation for a flight cancellation.
However, the airline should reimburse you the ticket price for the service not provided and, should you be stranded in a third country after a flight cancellation at short notice, take care of you with food and accommodation.
