The budget airline Germanwings is a subsidiary of Lufthansa and Europe’s third largest airline. Its airport is located in Cologne/Bonn. It operates hubs in Berlin-Tegel, Hannover, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart. Founded in 2002, Germanwings GmbH’s main office is in Cologne. The company’s history can however be traced back to 1997. In that year the airline, known as Eurowings Flug GmbH, was a wholly owned subsidiary of Eurowings Luftverkehr AG. It was then renamed Germanwings GmbH in 2002. At this time Lufthansa already owned 24.9 per cent of Eurowings-AG. All shares were sold to Deutsche Lufthansa-AG in 2009. Germanwings flies to 110 destinations in Germany, Europe and North Africa. Under which circumstances am I entitled to compensation?
There are several possibilities:
- You departed from an airport within Europe on any given airline (also includes non-EU airlines) or
- You arrived at an airport within Europe on a European airline
- Your flight was delayed at least three hours
- Your flight did not take place
- Your flight was over-booked. As a result there was no seat available
- You missed your connecting flight. As a result you arrived at your destination airport with a delay of more than three hours
